This project looks at how public housing location, as well as the criteria used to decide on locations for public housing, influence both tenant wellbeing and environmental impacts in terms of carbon emissions. We will look at current the transport patterns and needs of public housing tenants, and how these needs are currently met by transport modes such as walking, cycling and public transport. We will find out from tenants their views on the importance of access to other transport modes. To look at these aspects, we will make use of a combination of data sources, including existing New Zealand Household Travel Survey data, survey data we will collect from tenants and information from the housing providers. We will consider our results in the context of other work done both overseas and in Aotearoa New Zealand regarding transport, urban form and inequities.
